Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. As her natural talent was more evident and she was accepted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt school, which focuses on youngsters with sporty aptitude. At this school she met their teacher Jutta Muler. Witt made her breakthrough season in 1982 when she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point ahead she became the dominant figure skater in the sport. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female silver medal for figure skating in an extremely close contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt won the medal. Free skaters lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt is the first female figure skater to win the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating following her successes in the film industry as an actor. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she was not able to take home a medal, the young woman delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. The year 1995 was the year that Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
